Como Contemporary Festival 2022

Como Contemporary Festival wants to assert itself as a meeting point, a hangout moment, in which contemporary music contaminates other arts, to give life to a cycle of unique events. During the festival, always with today’s music at the forefront, artistic expression forms like photography, sound art, fiber art and poetry go side by side with music; musical works composed for this festival are performed as world premieres.

The third edition of the Como Contemporary Festival – International Festival of Contemporary Music and Other Arts, – will host world famous artists. We’re honored to announce that, on February 26, at the Teatro Sociale di Como, the festival will open with an extraordinary concert, during which Marco Rizzi, awarded solo violinist, winner of the world’s most important competitions, like Moscow’s Čaikovskij, Brussels’ Queen Elizabeth and the Indianapolis Violin Competition, will be on stage together with Enrico Bronzi, top musician with an extraordinary depth and founder of the Trio di Parma, with which he’s internationally renowned, and together with Floris Onstwedder, trumpeter, growing trumpet star quickly conquering all of Europe’s concert halls. They will perform with the Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra, led by its enthralling founder Lorenzo Passerini, an incredible series of works for solo instrument and orchestra, from baroque masterpieces by Georg Philipp Telemann to world premieres of the Como/born composer Umberto Pedraglio.

A series of concerts will take place from November 5 to November 13 at Villa Olmo: Giovanni Sollima, one of the world’s most famous cellists, eclectic musician and insatiable experimenter will perform in a very peculiar concert using sculpture cellos works by Julia Artico (hay cello), Damiano Costagli (aluminum cello), Filippo Fasser (aboriginal cello), Alessandro Peiretti (cardboard cello), Giovanni Sollima (invisible cello) and Antonio Bernardo (silk cello, commissioned by Como Contemporary Festival in collaboration with MINIARTEXTIL and Mantero Seta). There will be then Matias de Oliveira Pinto and Risa Adachi, established artists who have already performed in various concert halls throughout the world, will play a really interesting and diversified chamber music program; Moto Contrario Ensemble, a composers’ collective specializing in contemporary and research music, will perform here.

The Festival will end with an imposing concert on December, 9 in Como's Cathedral, featuring more than 100 professional musicians including solos, choir and orchestra. One of the greatest masterpieces in music history will be performed, Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, a tribute to Love and Peace by the great German composer. The evening will be opened by Umberto Pedraglio's new composition for mezzosoprano, choir and orchestra, based on the texts of Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Prize for Peace (1991). The concert will be offered to the City of Como as an occasion of gathering, reflection and sharing, and symbolically aims to be an authentic scream of peace to humankind.

To mention some of the partnerships of the Como Contemporary Festival 2022, we have the privilege of counting on the collaboration of institutions like the Teatro Sociale di Como, the Foundation Bortolaso-Totaro-Sponga and the Arte&Arte Association, creators of the XXXI Mostra Internazionale di Arte Contemporanea MINIARTEXTIL (International Contemporary Art Exhibition MINIARTEXTIL), that will host our concerts at Villa Olmo’s Salon, and the luxury hotel Villa d’Este, currently one of the best hotel in the world, where we’ll have the pleasure to inaugurate, on November 1, the Polifonie International Music Masterclass for emerging young musicians.

As a crown to this important territorial and international relationships’ network, we’ll have as President of the Jury of the International Composition Competition “Appassionato Ensemble” – an initiative having so far involved about 700 composers from more than 50 world countries -M° Ivan Fedele, world famous composer, formerly artistic director of La Biennale di Venezia for many years, member of and Composition chair holder at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. The competition will profit from the collaboration with Radio Cemat and Edizioni Sconfinarte for the publication of the winning score this year too. The collaboration with Mantero 1902, historical silk and textile production flagship company of the town of Como, is also renewed. Mantero will produce some silk garments with the festival logo, centered around the word COMO, designed and created ad hoc by the architects Bonetti-Gravic and strongly aligned with -Terragni’s rationalism, a symbol of Como and of its lake.

All of this will happen thanks to the contribution of Regione Lombardia; of PIC Piano Integrato della Cultura “Un Tesoro di Territorio” – a biennial program of the Como Lake cultural district funded by Regione Lombardia, coordinated and supported by the Chamber of Commerce Como-Lecco; of the Como Municipality; of Villa d’Este and of Cassa Rurale ed Artigiana di Cantù, our official sponsor. We moreover want to fondly thank the Palace Hotel in Como, Hotel Engadina, Villa Sassi, the Magazzino Musicale in Milan, SMIM Anzani in Cantù and Picone Pianoforti for their precious collaboration.
